HEAD OF THE LAGOON
The Redwood Scullers put on a strong performance at the Head of the Lagoon, a challenging 5000m head race held annually on the Foster City Lagoon. This event draws high school, collegiate, and club teams from around the region, offering competition in a wide range of boat classes. The Head of the Lagoon is well-known for its fast, sometimes windy course with a few technical turns that test rowers’ steering abilities and endurance. This year, with construction in Foster City, we had to be even more flexible, and all athletes who attended did a great job working with the limited space we had for boats and trailers. The Redwood Scullers, proudly representing on one of our home courses, took to the water with determination and grit, showcasing months of hard work and training.
The Redwood team had impressive finishes across several events leaving it all on the water. Here are some highlights:

The Head of The Charles in Boston saw some impressive performances from our athletes this year. In the men’s category, we had two singles entries—Wyatt Dent and Daniil Gurenkov—who finished 6th and 10th out of 45 competitors, respectively. On the women’s side, Olivia Petri took 2nd place in the single, narrowly edged out by a local rower from Cambridge Boat Club, overall fantastic racing by all!
Our women’s double, featuring Layla Abo and Sidra Sanders, skillfully navigated through the field. Starting 26th, they made a strong push to finish 11th overall. Meanwhile, our women’s coxed quad—Sofie Tafoya, Dorin Flynn, Emily Pecore, Jiwoo Oh, and cox Kassidy Avila—powered down the course, earning a well deserved medal for 2nd place!
The weather was beautiful this year, a stark contrast to last year’s wet conditions, making the course a perfect setting for our young athletes. Even better, all of our entries successfully qualified for next year’s Head of The Charles. Adding to the excitement, we had the pleasure of seeing so many Redwood alumni racing and cheering along the course this weekend, making it an even more special experience! We’re excited and looking forward to what is in store for our athletes at the next regatta, the Head of the Lagoon, in November!

2022 Henley Royal Regatta- Diamond Jubilee Cup
The Redwood girls went into England and took on the best scullers in the country. For 10 days they trained on the Thames as they awaited their first-round match. Caroline, Meena, Georgia and Lila took down each English crew – Hartspury, Tideway Scullers, Wycliffe and made it to the grand finals. The sheer determination it took for these girls to race 2112 meters, side by side through some of the worst water, and get themselves into the Finals at Henley Royal Regatta. Most firstcomers never make it past the second round. We had alumni Itai Almogy (Yale) and Andrew Macmillen (Tufts) on the shoreline cheering for us. In the finals, Redwood came out strong off the start but the women from Claire’s Court Boat Club had that last gear in the last 200 meters. Final - Claire’s court beat Redwood by 2/3 length in 7:35.
